After a six year run, it was time to change up Caballero's deck graphic. Just in time for the filming of the Animal Chin video in 1986, a new dragon graphic was created for Cab. Now known as the Cab Chinese Dragon, the artwork was inspired by a Chinese takeout box and finally illustrated by VCJ. The Chinese Dragon came on a new "fish" shape in full size and mini. It was produced as 7-ply maple and also "Bonite" construction. It was discontinued in 1987.Artwork by: Vernon Courtlandt Johnson. Long 4 - 2.5 old school truck hole pattern. In 1987 street skating was rapidly gaining popularity. Steve Caballero not only excelled at vert skating but was a top contender on the "Street-Style" circuit.
Powell-Peralta decided to introduce an additional Cab deck model specifically designed for street. Johnson created a new dragon graphic with a bats & bones background. Cab's name was also created in the bat shape since Cab was into Batman at the time. The Powell-Peralta logo was made using the Animal Chin font, also a sign of the times.
About the McGILL Skull & Snake Artwork. Just as Mike McGill was perfecting the 540 McTwist in the summer of 1984 at Swedish summer camp, V. Was working on a new deck graphic for him.Since the "Skull & Bones" theme was proving to be popular, that was the direction chosen for McGill's new deck. Mike's input was to add the snake and lightning bolts since there is an abundance of both in his home state of Florida. McGill's Skull & Snake is truly a classic skateboard icon.
Arguably the most iconic skateboard graphic of all time, "The Ripper" was illustrated in 1983 by legendary Powell-Peralta artist V. Next, the artwork found it's way onto t-shirts and eventually decks.
The Ripper graphic has stood the test of time and has been a staple of the Powell-Peralta line for over 30 years. Discovered at a Virginia Beach contest by Neil Blender and Lance, a young Mike Vallely was asked to join the Powell-Peralta team and quickly rose to fame as a premier street skater. After initially rejecting the Roach graphic, Vallely worked closely with VCJ on an elephant theme.
Mike and his elephant deck were both very popular. Mike currently runs Street Plant, a 100% independently owned and operated family business.100% Independent Skateboarding for Love, for Fun.
